Internal Security Organisation Audit
April 2008
Commissioner for Law Enforcement Data Security Standards 1 & 2 focus on the 'Internal Security Organisation' of Victoria Police. This refers to the requirement for Victoria Police to have an effective management structure that is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of a suitably secure environment for law enforcement data.
As a minimum, such a structure requires the nomination of a responsible senior Security Executive. Victoria Police is also required to appoint the key positions of Agency Security Advisor and Information Technology Security Advisor.
Victoria Police has appointed a Deputy Commissioner as the Security Executive. A security committee has been established, chaired by the Security Executive, with the brief to centrally coordinate organisation-wide security efforts. Victoria Police has appointed an Agency Security Advisor who is accountable to the Security Executive for Force-wide security matters and will manage a central security unit.
The audit recommended the urgent appointment of an Information Technology Security Advisor and the publication of an updated Force-wide information security policy which contains useful Victorian Police-specific guidance.
